Born on August 19, 1950, Sudha Murthy is a Padma Shri awardee, Indian Engineering teacher, Kannada, Marathi, and English author as well as a social worker.
She is the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation and a member of the public health care initiatives of the Gates Foundation.
Married to co-founder of Infosys, NR Narayana Murthy, she began her professional career as a computer science engineer.
She became the first female engineer hired in India’s largest auto manufacturer company Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (now Tata Motors Limited). She joined the company as a Development Engineer.
Murthy initiated a bold move to introduce computer and library facilities in all schools in Karnataka and taught computer science to students.
In 1995, she was awarded the ‘Best Teacher Award’ from Rotary Club at Bengaluru. In 1996, she started Infosys Foundation and to date, she has been the Trustee of Infosys Foundation.
Sudha Murthy’s first notable work is ‘How I Taught My Grandmother to Read and Other Stories. She has written many books, from which two are travelogues, two technical books, six novels, and three educative books.
In 2006, she received the RK Narayana’s Award for Literature and the Life Time Achievement Award at the Crossword-Raymond Book Awards.
Dollar Bahu, a novel authored by her in Kannada and translated into English as Dollar Bahu, was adapted as a televised series in 2001.
She has acted in Marathi and Kannada films. She has also appeared in Kaun Banega Crorepati season 11’s finale week.
HIGHLIGHT: Murthy has founded several orphanages and has established ‘The Murthy Classical Library of India’ at Harvard University.
