Hyderabad: Festivity is in the air. And unlike last year when the pandemic forced everyone to remain indoors most of the time, this Diwali, people are venturing out and what’s better than street shopping?

And if you are looking for some local festive collections, one of the popular destinations right now is the Mahankali Street in Secunderabad.

There are street vendors sitting near the temple premises, selling a wide variety of diyas and also some handmade dolls. The whole street is packed with around 30 daily vendors who are selling different diyas like the Jaipur diyas, diyas made of traditional handmade terracotta clay, and also painted matki diyas.

Lalitha, one of the vendors who makes a living selling dolls near the temple said they were doing the business for the last 45 years.

“People come here to shop for diyas and other dolls too.  We get the collection from different places like Jiyaguda, Begum Bazaar and Koti,” she said.

Along with the diyas, the vendors also sell cotton wicks, different varieties of dolls for ‘Bommala Koluvu’ which is also a part of the Diwali celebrations for Telugus. They also have various types of handcrafted ‘donthulu’ sets and other home décor items. Colours and ‘rangoli’ stencils also are available on the same street.

You get a small ‘donthulu’ set for Rs.200 and a big one for Rs.400, while the prices for the dolls start from Rs.100 and go on to Rs.350 for a pair. They also have some new concept dolls, making the street a must visit destination while shopping for Diwali.
