Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s take on the ‘double-engine growth’ claims of Prime Minister Narendra Modi terming it as nothing but a ‘trouble-engine’ was not just an off-the-cuff remark. A quick glance at the performance of States particularly Telangana indicates that States ruled by non-BJP parties performed far better than the BJP-ruled States as is evident in their Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) and Per Capita Income (PCI) figures.
On Tuesday, the Chief Minister compared the development indices of Uttar Pradesh with that of Telangana and rubbished the BJP’s theory that the same party governing both at the Centre and State ensures rapid development. As per the numbers released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on March 15, Telangana recorded a staggering growth of 19.1 per cent at current prices with Rs 11.54 lakh crore in 2021-22, over the previous financial year. The State achieved a sharp increase of 11.2 per cent in the growth rate of GSDP at constant (2011-12) prices in 2021-22, in comparison to 2020-21. Considering the contraction of 3.5 per cent in GSDP growth rate due to the Covid pandemic in 2020-21, Telangana registered an overall growth rate of 14.7 per cent.
While Telangana secured the second spot preceded by Madhya Pradesh at 19.7 per cent GSDP growth at current prices, it was ranked third among the States led by Tripura and Andhra Pradesh with 12.2 per cent and 11.4 per cent respectively in GSDP growth at constant prices. However, in a comparative study of GSDP growth at current and constant prices, only three BJP-ruled States — Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Haryana — made it to the top 10. The other major States like Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu, which secured a place among the top 10 performing States are ruled by non-BJP parties.
Further, Telangana secured top rank among major States in Per Capita Income (PCI) placed at Rs 2,78,833 at current prices in 2021-22 i.e., 18.78 per cent higher over the previous fiscal. At constant prices too, the State was in top position with a PCI of Rs 1,62,142 in 2021-22, recording a growth rate of 10.8 per cent over the previous financial year of 2020-21.
Only Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana which are ruled by BJP made it to the top 10 list. The remaining positions were secured by Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Rajasthan that are ruled by non-BJP parties. Thus, Telangana along with other States has proved that there was no need for the same party to govern both at the Centre and State to ensure development. Instead, States ruled by regional parties which are branded as ‘single engines’ have not only performed better but have also turned out to be the largest contributors to the national economy when compared to the States with ‘double engines’.
