Sangareddy: In the wake of a caution by the Dam Safety Review Panel (DSRP) regarding a possible breach if the Singur project reservoir is filled to its brim, the Irrigation Department is contemplating restricting water storage to 22 TMCft this year, against its Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 29.91 TMCft.
As of 6 pm on Friday, the project held 21.124 TMCft of water and was receiving inflows of 5,170 cusecs from upstream. The water level had reached 521.8 metres.
If similar inflows continue for the next 48 hours, irrigation authorities will have to release water downstream into the river course. The department will be unable to store additional inflows during the remainder of the season.
Sources in the Irrigation Department told Telangana Today that a formal decision may be taken within a couple of days after discussions with higher officials, the irrigation minister, and other stakeholders.
This will be the first time that the department is restricting water storage in the Singur reservoir since its construction in 1999. However, the decision may impact Yasangi irrigation operations under the project.
