Amaravati: A garden party with families and friends ended on a tragic note as six teenagers, all students, drowned in a swollen rivulet in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, police said.

After the community lunch, the teenagers tried to swim in the nearby Pedavagu but drowned one after the other in the rivulet.

“Normally, the depth in the rivulet is just about two feet but because of the recent heavy rains and floods, the depth increased to about 10 feet.

The unsuspecting youths tried to swim and unfortunately drowned,” a police official said.
In fact, after seeing one of them drown, the others tried a rescue effort but they too drowned, he added. Expert divers were deployed to fish out the bodies.

The deceased, who belonged to Bhudevipeta village, have been identified as G Manoj (16), Konavarapu Radhakrishna (16), Karnati Ranjit (16), Sriramula Sivaji (17), Gangadhar Venkat (17) and Ch Bhuvan (18), police said.

The Velerupadu police registered a case and launched an investigation.
