Soon, renew your International Driving Permit while abroad
Amendment facilitates such citizens to apply through the Indian Embassy/Mission abroad portals, and applications would then move to the VAHAN for being considered by the respective RTOs
Hyderabad: In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a draft notification proposing to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) 1989 to facilitate the issuance of International Driving Permit (IDP) for citizens whose permit has expired while they are abroad.
The Ministry said there was no mechanism for the IDP renewal for citizens whose permit gets expired while they are abroad. The validity of IDP is one year from the date of its issue or the validity of the domestic licence whichever is earlier. Usually, IDP requires a valid driving licence held by the applicant and copies thereon, along with copies of passport, visa, where applicable, and air ticket for verification.

According to the draft notification, the amendment facilitates such citizens to apply through the Indian Embassy/Mission abroad portals, and applications would then move to the VAHAN for being considered by the respective RTOs.
The proposal also includes the removal of the conditions of a medical certificate and a valid visa at the time of making the request for the IDP in the country. Further, there are certain countries where visa-on-arrival is available and in such cases, the visa is not necessary while applying for the IDP in India before travel.
The Ministry has invited suggestions and comments about the notification and the same could be sent to Joint Secretary (MVL,IT & Toll), email: jspb-morth@gov.in, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Transport Bhawan, Parliament Street, New Delhi-110 001.
