Srisailam dam gates to open as water level nears full capacity

With water levels nearing full capacity, Srisailam dam gates will be opened on Tuesday. Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu will visit the site to release floodwater. Telangana is yet to act on lifting water from Kalwakurthy despite ongoing inflows

Hyderabad: Amid rising inflows due to heavy rains in upper catchment areas, officials at the Srisailam dam have announced that the reservoir gates will be lifted on Tuesday. The decision follows a consistent rise in water levels, with the dam now holding 190.33 TMCft of water against its full capacity of 215.80 TMCft. The current water level has touched 880.40 feet, nearing the full reservoir level of 885 feet.

As per project engineers, the inflow from upstream projects like Jurala and Sunkesula has reached 1,98,550 cusecs. Srisailam project outflows currently stand at 59,239 cusecs, with 23,924 cusecs being released through the right bank power station and 35,315 cusecs through the left bank station toward Nagarjunasagar via power generation.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is scheduled to visit the Srisailam project at 12 noon on Tuesday to participate in the Jalaharati programme and formally release floodwater towards the Nagarjunasagar project.

However, the Telangana government is yet to take a decision on the release of water from the Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme. Despite receiving floodwater for nearly a month, the BRS has been alleging that the State government did not lift the water and failed to supply irrigation water to farmers in the Palamuru region of Telangana.
