Bhupalpally: The incident of students falling sick due to water contamination in a government school in the district took a shocking turn when it was found that a teacher intentionally contaminated the water by mixing pesticide in a school water tank.
As many as 11 students, along with a teacher, Rajender, fell ill after consuming the contaminated water on Friday at Gandhi Nagar Urban Residential School at the district headquarters. They are undergoing treatment at the District Headquarters Hospital, Bhupalpally.
Local MLA Gandra Satyanarayana Rao visited the school on Saturday to take stock of the situation. The startling revelation came when students told the MLA that science teacher Rajender mixed pesticide with water.
Students further alleged that frequent clashes occurred between teachers and the principal at the school. Rajender reportedly poisoned the water to settle scores with the principal, with whom he had differences.
They said Rajender mixed the pesticide with water on Friday morning and sprinkled it on blankets to avoid suspicion. The pesticide bottle was later found hidden in the blankets. The teacher allegedly warned students not to reveal his act.
Doctors who treated the students also suspected pesticide contamination in the drinking water. Students claimed that Rajender himself consumed the water and got admitted to the hospital along with them to divert suspicion.
Police took Rajender into custody for questioning and he reportedly confessed to the crime. The MLA ordered departmental action against him and other teachers responsible for disorder at the school.
