Warangal: As many as 27 students fell ill due to suspected food poisoning at the Government Tribal Girls’ Ashram School in Wardhannapet town of Warangal district.

The affected girls were shifted to the local Government Area Hospital for treatment. According to officials, some of the students complained of severe stomach pain and diarrhoea on Sunday night. The school ANM administered tablets to the students.

However, several other students also developed similar symptoms on Monday morning, and they were immediately shifted to the hospital by the staff. It was said that the students had chapati and puri for breakfast, chicken with bagara rice for lunch and okra fry for dinner on Sunday.

Upon learning of the incident, Collector Satya Sharada directed ZP CEO Ram Reddy, who is the special officer of the school, and local officials to inspect the school and submit a report detailing the cause of the suspected food poisoning.

The ZP CEO, Tahsildar Vijay Kumar and others visited the school as well as the hospital and interacted with the students and the hospital superintendent. Of the 27 students, five were being administered intravenous (IV) fluids, while the others were given tablets, the tahsildar said.

The preliminary investigation revealed unhygienic conditions on the hostel premises. A detailed report would be submitted to the Collector, and strict action would be taken against those responsible in accordance with the Collector’s directions, the officials said.

It was said that a similar incident took place at the school some time ago, following which the hostel warden and the cook were removed from service.
