Hyderabad: Sumukhi Suresh is currently all about creating a unique platform for women. The stand-up comedian and actor, who recently launched a content platform called ‘Motormouth’ for writers who are interested to develop and pitch stories for movies, web shows and more, said that she is excited to chat with ‘Telangana Today’.
“I was so excited to talk to a leading newspaper down South,” said Sumukhi and added, “Motormouth is simply my excuse to take over the world! The last two years in a pandemic, the only thing most of us could do is create things. And I feel writing is such a powerful medium and it has so much money in it. I want writers, especially female writers, to know that writing can be cool and glamorous much like acting. So, I thought of starting Motormouth with the hope that actors can also get to play interesting characters in the future through our material.”
Sumukhi is known for creating and acting in the show ‘Pushpavalli’ and starring in the film ‘Go Straight Take Left’. The 34-year-old writer, who is also known for the show ‘Comicstaan’, shared, “I have about nine writers on-board right now, and all of them – mostly girls – are extremely funny.”
On what they will be doing at Motormouth, she said, “Actor and writer Sumaira Shaikh and I are first co-creating a college comedy thriller show, set in Mumbai with a Muslim girl as the prime character. The show will go on the floors soon through a well-known OTT platform. I am also writing an inspirational comedy movie with director Tushar Hiranandani of ‘Saand Ki Aankh’ fame. There’s also a show set in UP. We would not mind exploring sci-fi and other genres.”
Sumukhi feels stand-up is “selfish” and she can “pull it off with ease” by even joking on her personality on a tough day, but writing for fiction is much harder and daunting. Talking about her shift, she says, “When you’re writing for stand-up, all you need is to be funny and skilled. When you’re writing for a movie or a show, you are responsible for each and every character. The audience is smart nowadays and will immediately call out cringe content. I’ve been writing for six years now, but I would say I am still a young writer.”
Although Sumukhi enjoys acting, she feels films wouldn’t want to cast someone with her body type. So now, with her own platform, she can cast anyone she wishes to because she will have the power. Talking about her other projects, Sumukhi says she’s working on her Netflix special, and she is looking forward to pitching a tech comedy. “I do not believe in the concept of sleep, that’s how busy I am,” shares Sumukhi, who wishes the stand-up comedy scene that was hit drastically by the Covid-19 pandemic picks up soon in India.
Talking about her other interests, she reveals that she absolutely enjoys cooking and feeding people. She also loves performing in Hyderabad. “My shows are the best in Hyderabad. Once, I did a one-hour-fifteen-minute stand-up show in the city when the comic appearing after me couldn’t make it. That was my first one-hour-plus show and it will always remain special,” shares Sumukhi.
The only way to become a stand-up comedian is attending as many live shows or Zoom shows as possible and finding out if you are actually funny, she concludes.
