Surgeons at KIMS Cuddles save preterm baby with congenital heart defect
According to doctors, the baby was born on April 21 with a congenital heart defect known as Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), also commonly known as a hole in the heart.
Hyderabad: Paediatric surgeons at KIMS Cuddles have saved the life of a preterm baby with a heart defect with a minimally invasive heart procedure. The baby was born during the seventh month of pregnancy and weighed just 1100 grams.
According to doctors, the baby was born on April 21 with a congenital heart defect known as Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), also commonly known as a hole in the heart. The PDA is a gap or a hole between two major arteries extending from the heart.
At birth, the baby needed breathing support that was provided by a non-surgical process of supplying oxygen to lungs known as nasal CPAP. Later, the baby was put on drugs to see if they (drugs) would curb growth of the hole or PDA.
With the PDA not closing, the doctors decided to close it with a device inserted in the Cath lab. Thus, a procedure by using plug in cardiac catheterization lab was employed to eliminate the PDA without the baby having to go through surgery, Dr C Aparna, Chief Neonatologist, and Dr. Sudeep Verma, Paediatric Cardiologist, from KIMS Cuddles said.
The baby was discharged on June 11 with stable cardio-respiratory at a weight of 1500 grams, doctors added.
