Suryapet: The farmers in the district celebrated Eruvaka Pournami by starting tilling of agriculture fields. It is a tradition for farmers to celebrate ‘Eruvaka’ on Jyeshta Sudha Pournami in the Telugu calendar. The farmers decked up the cattle, wooden ploughs, cleaned the agriculture fields and performed poojas to the land with prayers that agriculture activity goes on smoothly and they get high yield of crops.
Energy Minister G Jagdish Reddy participated in Eruvaka programme at Gajula Malkapuram of Penphad mandal in the district and took the traditional wooden plough at an agriculture field for more than half-an-hour.
Speaking on the occasion, Jagdish Reddy said cultivation had turned into a festival after it became profitable due to the pro-farmers policies of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao. “The farmers of Telangana are keeping moving with time, adopting modern cultivation methods and achieving high yields of crops,” he said, adding that the State topped the country in paddy production.
In addition to extending investment support under Rythu Bandhu in advance to crop season, the state government has been ensuring irrigation facility and 24 hours electricity supply to the farmers in the state. He said the state government was acting tough on spurious seeds marketing and also succeeded in cracking the rackets involved in such activity. These measures have helped the farmers to get quality seeds in the market.
Citing the farmers starting cultivation works in a festive atmosphere as an example of restoration of past glory to the agriculture sector, he said the farmers should switch over to modern cultivation methods from traditional methods to improve their income. He said filling of irrigation tanks with Godavari waters through SRSP stage-II canals was already going on in the district. Irrigation facility would also be provided to farmers for Vaanakalam crop season through the SRSP canal, he added.
