Mancherial: Suspense continues over the selection of candidates for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor of the newly created Mancherial Municipal Corporation (MCC) among the three major political parties.
The post of mayor has been reserved for BC (General). Candidates from BC communities have pinned high hopes on the elected representatives and leaders of the Congress, BJP and BRS, expecting to be considered for the much-coveted post if they manage to secure victory in the polls. They are leaving no stone unturned to ensure electoral success.
More than three aspirants in each party are vying for the mayoral post. They are reportedly investing huge sums in publicity and efforts to appease electors, anticipating that they would eventually be chosen as the head of the civic body. Each aspirant is said to be spending at least Rs.1 crore in their respective divisions, eyeing the key post.
However, public representatives and leaders of the Congress, BJP and BRS have been strategically maintaining silence on the candidates to be picked as mayor. They have refrained from revealing names, apprehending that it could trigger internal bickering and adversely affect the prospects of their parties.
It is learnt that the mayoral candidate is likely to be finalised at the State level, taking into account various factors such as financial background, charisma and popularity among the public. While MCC is scheduled to go to the polls on February 13, the results will also be declared on the same day. The election of both the mayor and deputy mayor will be held on February 16.
Meanwhile, multiple aspirants are competing to secure the posts of chairpersons in Bellampalli, Chennur, Kyathanapalli and Luxettipet municipalities. They have intensified efforts to draw the attention of local elected representatives and senior party leaders, earmarking substantial budgets for campaigning and winning the elections.
