Hyderabad: Suspense continues over whether Mirza Rahmath Baig, who was expelled from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) on Friday night, would submit his resignation from the Telangana Legislative Council.

The development assumes significance after the AIMIM leadership asked him to step down as MLC following a purported video alleging sexual misconduct that triggered widespread discussion on social media.

Baig has remained incommunicado since Friday afternoon, and his mobile phones have been switched off. There is no official confirmation so far on whether he has submitted his resignation to the Chairperson of the Legislative Council or is willing to do so. Though the AIMIM leadership, while expelling him from the party, also asked him to resign as MLC, Baig, it is learnt, is in no mood to submit his resignation.

In a video statement, Baig denied any wrongdoing and alleged the video had been generated and circulated using AI to defame him and the party. He appealed to people not to link AIMIM, party president Asaduddin Owaisi, or AIMIM floor leader and Chandrayangutta MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi to the controversy. A police complaint was made, and a case was registered by the police.

In another significant development, the social media accounts maintained by Baig have no major updates. The last update was about his visit to Saudi Arabia for Umrah pilgrimage.
