Hyderabad: Swanky classrooms with thematic paintings adorning the walls, dual desks and other new infrastructure are set to change the face of the government schools. Under the State government’s flagship programme ‘Mana Ooru-Mana Badi’, the government schools in the State are in for a major revamp.

As part of the programme, new additional classrooms, new toilets for both girls and boys, compound walls, overhead water tanks and sump for storing water, and a safe drinking water facility are coming up in these schools.

As per initial estimates, over 7,000 new toilets in both Indian and western styles with running water facilities are being constructed in the first phase of the programme. And for the first time, all the government schools will get dining facilities with stainless steel furniture, and kitchen sheds are also being built based on the necessity.

In order to improve infrastructure and quality of education in government schools, the State government announced ‘Mana Ooru-Mana Badi’ as a flagship programme with a budget of Rs 7,289.54 crore in three phases over a period of three years.

A total of 19.84 lakh students in 26,065 government schools will benefit from the programme where it will be undertaken in 9,123 of total schools covering 65 per cent of students in the first phase during the current academic year of 2021-22.

As the number of students joining the government schools is increasing with each passing year, a total of 4,000 new additional classrooms are being constructed under the first phase of the programme. Not just constructing new classrooms, the schools will get dual desks, digital equipment besides green chalk boards in the classrooms. Apart from taking up major and minor repair works, compound walls, wherever necessary, are also being built in the schools.

All the schools will be refurbished with thematic paintings on the walls and each classroom will be equipped with four LED lights and ceiling fans. A total of 3,000 schools will be provided with the necessary infrastructure required for the library, computer and science labs, and new furniture will also be provided to the teaching staff and headmaster’s office of each school.

Works have already commenced in four government schools – primary and high schools in Shivarampally and Jillelaguda of Ranga Reddy district, and Aliya and Mahbubia (girls) schools in Hyderabad on a pilot basis. These will be a model for other schools across the State.

“The works in four schools are expected to be completed in the next 15 days and the first phase of the programme will be completed in the next one year,” a senior official said.
