Hyderabad: The Nehru Zoological Park honored its biggest residents – Vanaja, Asha, Sita and Vijay – with a jumbo feast of fresh fruits and vegetables, followed by a peaceful walk, marking the World Elephant Day celebrations here on Tuesday.
The three female elephants – Vanaja, Asha and Sita – were taken out of their enclosure and walked for around 3 km within the zoo premises.
For all its jumbo residents, the zoo arranged a special jumbo treat comprising cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, sweet corn, papayas, bananas, watermelons, apples, pine apples, oranges, grapes, sugarcane, coconuts and more.
In addition, special cakes, each weighing 5 kg and made with cooked rice, ragi and fruits, were served to the elephants.
Nehru Zoological Park Curator J Vasantha said that, with the help of animal keepers, zoo kitchen and store staff, jumbo cakes were prepared and served to all elephants.
Visitors were allowed into the enclosure to view the elephants from close quarters. Facts about elephants and their importance in the ecosystem were shared with visitors.
