Additional returning officer (ARO) Virendra Kumar has been booked for cheating, forgery and fraud on a complaint from Returning Officer Sunil Kumar, a senior police official said.

The commission has made it clear that polling will not be held in the constituencies affected by a stay order issued by a court and where the local body has more than six months of its tenure left.

State Election Commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar said elections were unanimous only for 16 percent of the seats and about 10,890 sarpanches and 47,500 ward members were elected directly. 

The election is being held in 12 mandals of Machilipatnam revenue division in Krishna district for 196 Sarpanch posts and 1,440 ward members.

Though the elections were to be held for 3,328 Panchayat sarpanchs, 539 have been unanimously elected while no nomination was filed for three villages.

Ramakrishna Reddy slammed the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders for distorting the facts through a section of media to confuse the public.

Panchayat polls in the state are scheduled to begin from February 9 and will go on till February 21 in four phases.

The orders issued are in the nature of reasonable restrictions and are essentially preventive measures, taken recourse to ensure free and fair elections.
