farmer Soma Srinivas, who sat on a fast-unto-death in protest against the denial of the farm loan waiver to his family on Tuesday, withdrew his strike following an assurance from agriculture officials in the evening.
Farmers staged dharna blocking roads and raised slogans against the State government for not extending the waiver to them. They said that they were forced to roam around banks to get the scheme. Due to the protest, traffic came to a standstill for a while.
Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy said the loan waiver was pending in respect of over 17 lakh accounts. The waiver was could not be implemented due to technical reasons and that their issues would be addressed soon.
A decision was taken to stage ‘rasta roko’ protest on national highways on Saturday. This apart, they demanded that the State government should waive their crop loans without imposing any terms and conditions.
The RBI informed that due to technical problems, around Rs 84.94 crore was not credited into 17,877 bank accounts which would be now returned to the State government after rectifying the issue, said Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao.
