According to Xinhua news agency, an armed group identifying as "The Islamic Resistance in Iraq" stated in an online message on Sunday that its combatants deployed two booby-trapped drones at the Ayn al-Asad Airbase near al-Baghdadi, approximately 190 km northwest of Baghdad.
The longest-running conflict in US history, the war in Afghanistan has led to the deaths of nearly 2,400 American troops, and cost the country around $2 trillion.
The move was immediately opposed by the Opposition Democratic Party of the President-elect Joe Biden, whose lawmakers described it as a threat to national security.
The United States first intervened in Afghanistan following the September 11, 2001 attacks and dislodged the Taliban regime, which had welcomed Al-Qaeda.
