New Delhi: A 19-year-old tea seller has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a driver to death following a dispute over the price of gutka near Azadpur Mandi in northwest Delhi, an official said on Monday.
Police arrested Rahul, a resident of Libaspur, on Sunday night and recovered a knife used in the crime from him, the officer said.
On April 3, police received a call regarding a stabbing incident near Sarai Pipal Thala, close to the Azadpur Mandi area.
“The victim was rushed to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial (BJRM) Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The deceased was identified as Nazim, a resident of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, who worked as a driver transporting vegetables to Azadpur Mandi,” the officer said.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Nazim had gone to a nearby tea stall for food after arriving at the mandi when he got into an argument with the tea seller over the price of gutka (tobacco). The argument soon escalated into a physical altercation, during which the accused stabbed him.
Police teams reached the spot, registered an FIR and launched an investigation.
The accused, who fled the scene after the incident, was arrested on Sunday. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and was found to be a first-time offender with no previous criminal record, police said.
