Hyderabad: In order to inculcate reading habit among children and to fill the learning gap caused due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the School Education Department will be launching a 100-day reading campaign in the schools after the Sankranti vacation.
As part of the campaign, READ – Read, Enjoy and Develop programme will be conducted for students of Balvatika to Class VIII in all schools across the State. This campaign which is a 14-week initiative of the Ministry of Education has different activities-based reading for children of different classes.
Some of the activities for Classes VI to VIII students include exposure visits to the library, read and write, read with friends, read for fun, reading poetry, read and enact, and book recommendations.
For children of Balvatika, Class I and II, the focus will be laid on developing effective communication including critical and creative thinking. In the case of Classes III to V students, emphasis will be on developing writing and verbal skills besides critical and creative thinking. For students of classes VI to VIII, the schools will focus on developing vocabulary.
As part of the campaign, school management should take students to an exposure visit to the school library where students should be encouraged to read an age-appropriate book. They should also tell a few lines about the book read in the library.
The schools have also been asked to initiate the DEAR – Drop, Everything and Read programme wherein on any decided day and time, all students in the school or at home must read any book for at least 20 minutes. To ensure effective implementation of the campaign, the department has decided to strengthen the libraries in the schools.
“Inculcating the reading habit among children will help them learn anything. For at least one period every day, students have to read a book as part of the campaign. Awareness will be also created among parents on the importance of reading,” said S Vinayak, nodal officer of the programme.
