Hyderabad: The brand name for Narayanpet’s famous handlooms and handicrafts, Aarunya, is a project initiated by Narayanpet Collector Hari Chandana amidst Covid-19 to help local women sell their specialized products.
What started with a 10-women team coming together to sell their art is now organizing a full-fledged campaign to train other women on how to make Kalankari and Black Paintings. With the help of District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) officials, Aarunya secured funding from NABARD to conduct these training sessions.
Trained by Deepika Sarode, a fashion designer from NIFT, these women now have an opportunity to make their own art and sell it through Aarunya’s website giving them a chance at being financially independent.
On successful completion of phase one of these sessions, CMO Secretary Smita Sabharwal presented the participants with certificates and interacted with them to understand their needs going forward.
Apart from facilitating the sale of locally weaved sarees, Aarunya also supports locally made fig jam and clay jewelry.
On Monday, Hari Chandana tweeted thanking Sabharwal for motivating the women of Aarunya.
