Telangana Academy of Media extends financial aid of Rs 5.15 cr to scribes

Academy extended financial support to about 1,553 journalists who contracted the virus during the first wave of the pandemic and another 1,958 journalists who tested positive during the second wave

Hyderabad: Telangana Academy of Media has extended financial aid amounting to Rs 5.15 crore to journalists working in the State during Covid-19 pandemic. The Academy extended financial support to about 1,553 journalists who contracted the virus during the first wave of the pandemic and another 1,958 journalists who tested positive during the second wave.

The academy used the proceeds from the interest earned against the corpus fund sanctioned to the Media Academy to help journalists. Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao sanctioned a corpus fund of Rs 100 crore for the welfare of journalists and around Rs 42 crore have been deposited so far. “No other State extended such support to the journalists suffering with Covid which is unprecedented,” Telangana Media Academy chairman Allam Narayana said in a statement.

Meanwhile, nearly 70 journalists suffered untimely death due to the Covid-19 in the State during the second wave. The Media Academy has decided to extend a one-time financial aid of Rs 2 lakh each to the bereaved families of these journalists as well as provide pension of Rs 3,000 per month for five years as per the existing norms. A scholarship of Rs 1,000 will be provided to two children from the bereaved family upto Class 10th.

The families of journalists who passed away due to Covid-19 are requested to submit applications for financial support to the Telangana Media Academy, House.no.10-2-1, Samachar Bhavan, second floor, Telangana State Film and Television Development Corporation complex, AC Guards, Masab Tank, Hyderabad.
