Hyderabad: A woman’s way of getting even, after being cheated in a job scam, led her into the world of crime and ultimately landing her behind the bars, along with her husband and four others in Wanaparthy district of Telangana.

The Wanaparthy police, which was investigating the sensational and unsuccessful attempt to burgle a branch of the Union Bank in Amarachinta town ultimately zeroed in on the culprits and arrested five of them including the woman, identified as Pasula Ankitha.

In the abortive bid to burgle the bank, the intruders broke one of the handles of the safe locker and later stole the Digital Video Recorder connected to the CCTVs. Apart from this no valuable was lost from the bank.

Disclosing the details of the painstaking investigation that led to unravelling of the mystery behind the abortive attempt to burgle the bank, district SP Ravula Giridhar told newsmen on Monday that the main culprit took to crime as she was cheated in a job scam earlier.

Ankitha, police said, was cheated of Rs 5 lakh by a person who promised her to get a job in the South Central Railway (SCR) in 2019. After realising that she was cheated, she started working in a private company and then decided to use the same modus operandi in which she was cheated, to earn more money. She had collected Rs 18 lakh from three persons from Gadwal promising them the same job and spent the money lavishly.

Later she got married to one Racham Jagadishwar Reddy in 2022 and the couple ran into huge debts as they built a house. Meanwhile, the trio who were cheated by Ankitha, lodged a complaint with the police and then she confessed to her husband and requested him to help her repay the money. Accordingly, the couple contacted the complainants and promised to return the money.

However, to raise money to repay the trio, Ankitha and her husband planned to burgle a bank and did extensive recce jobs in Narayanpet, Marikal, Gadwal, Amarachinta and other places. They zeroed in on Amarachinta bank as there was open place behind the bank.

Accordingly, the couple convinced three others to help them in the proposed bank burglary. They went to to the Union Bank in Amarachinta on the night of December 27, 2024 and broke open the rear window grills. They tried to break open the strong room hoping to find large amounts of money and valuables. But they could not open the locks, but managed to break one of the handles of the strong room. Later they realised that there were CCTVs in the strong room and then they disconnected the DVR and took it away. The attempt to burglary was reported to police on December 30 as there were two consecutive holidays on 28.

Special police teams constituted to crack the case, found the five culprits and arrested tem on Sunday evening, when they were moving in a vehicle that was used in commission of the crime. The arrested included Ankitha, her husband Jagadishwar Reddy, her brother Racham Basker Reddy, and her friends Mand Nagaraju and Ganesh

The special teams were led by DSP Venkateshwar Rao, CI Shivakumar, SI Suresh. The team recovered the DVR and the implements used in the crime.
