Hyderabad: Telangana has catapulted itself into the top five States adopting green principles in construction. As many as 475 projects are registered with the Indian Green Building Council (ICBC), the apex body driving the green building movement across the country. Other four states are Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
This translates into 320 million sqft across commercial, apartment and villa projects. Out of these, 93 are already certified. In Hyderabad alone, there are 405 IGBC registered projects taking the green footprint to 292 million sqft. As many as 86 are IGBC certified projects. The IGBC also worked closely with the Government of Telangana to retrofit existing IT parks as Green Buildings in Cyberabad.
Green buildings aim to save water and energy, enhance material efficiency and also enhance indoor air quality among others. The incremental cost for using green materials now is about five per cent more than the traditional building materials. This was about 20 per cent more in the initial days when the green movement started around in 2003. “The Government, the building material manufacturers and suppliers and all stakeholders have been working to bring down the costs to encourage greater adoption of green principles in the constructions,” said M Anand, Principal Counsellor, CII-Sohrabji Green Business Centre.
The green building movement began in Hyderabad with the CII-Godrej GBC building at Hitec City. This building became India’s first Platinum rated green building in the year 2004.
Some of the products and technologies available include glass and glazing system for reducing the air-conditioning load, utra-low flow and flush fixture to reduce water consumption, people-friendly finishing products like paints, adhesives, sealants, Internet-based smart lighting system and smart energy and water metering systems. “There is a glass that can dynamically change its colour with the day. It will turn dark during the day and light in the nights. A special coating on it does not allow any heat to pass through it. ACs are also available,” he said.
CII’s Indian Green Building Council will host the 19th edition of ‘Green Building Congress (GBC21) from November 18 to 21 virtually on the CII HIVE platform. World Green Building Council is a supporting partner for this flagship event which will see participation from ten countries. The online expo will showcase building technologies, about 500 products, and services and be on for a month.
