Hyderabad: Most tipplers preferred chilled beer instead of whisky during the New Year celebrations organized at different parts of the State on Friday night. Undeterred by dipping temperature across the State for the last few days, tipplers preferred beer and celebrated New Year on the grand note. Since afternoon, the wine shops teemed with customers, who purchased cartons of their favourite brand of beer instead of whisky.
Sensing that the demand for the beer would more during the New Year celebrations, the wine shop owners purchased additional stock from the depots of Telangana State Beverages Corporation Limited (TSBCL) to meet the customers’ requirements.
Sources said the Prohibition and Excise department registered a record sale of Rs.3,435 crore of liquor and beer sales in December 2021. The shop owners purchased stock worth over Rs.148 crore from the TSBCL depots on Friday in view of the sales in connection with the New Year.
Telangana Wine Dealers’ Association president D Venkateswara Rao said a majority of customers evinced interest in consuming beer only this time. However, some shops did not register brisk sales because of restrictions imposed by the law enforcement agencies. In all, the liquor sales were better this time compared to the sales in 2020, he added.
