Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) on Friday urged the Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan to order a court monitored Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the brutal murder of the lawyer couple – Gattu Vaman Rao and PV Nagamani – in Ramagundam a few days ago.
In a memorandum submitted to the Governor, a delegation led by the TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy said the Congress was urging for the CBI probe for a detailed and fair investigation.
The murder of the couple in a broad daylight in public view proved that there was total collapse of the law and order in the State, he said. The couple, appearing as counsels in different cases, filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) about the alleged custodial death of a Dalit, Seelam Rangaiah, in Manthani police station under the Ramagundam Police Commissionerate.
During hearing of the case recently in High Court, Vaman Rao, who was appearing as a counsel for the PIL filed by his wife, informed that they were receiving threat calls from the police and others. The couple also faced harassment in the form of false cases, Uttam Kumar Reddy said adding that one Kunta Srinivas was the main suspect in the case.
The Congress leaders later met the Director-General of Police M. Mahendar Reddy and urged him to take stern action against the suspects involved in the case. He said the police department was on the verge of collapsing in the wake of the recent incidents that took place in the State.
Uttam Kumar Reddy, Congress MLA D. Sridhar Babu and other leaders informed the DGP that the local police in Ramagundam were attempting to weaken the case pertaining to the murder of the lawyer couple.
