Telangana: Crime rate against women sees 5 per cent jump in 2024

241 women murdered this year in various cases while 2,945 women were raped and 1,122 kidnapped

Hyderabad: The crime against women registered nearly 5 per cent increase during 2024 in Telangana. A total of 241 women were murdered this year in various cases while 2,945 women were raped and 1,122 kidnapped. The State reported 5,940 cases of outraging of modesty.

The number of women victims in murder cases crossed the 200-mark in last two years with 241 murders in 2024 and 213 the previous year. In 2022, the number stood at 181. In 2021, a total of  199 women were murdered and in 2020, it was 161.

In rape cases, the highest number of victims were in the age group of 15-18 with 1,970 cases reported followed by 888 who are aged above 18. “Teenage relationships are becoming an increasing area of concern,” said Additional DG Women Safety Wing, Shikha Goel.

In rape and POCSO cases, the police arrested the suspects promptly and 940 arrests in fact, were made within eight hours of the incident reported to police. In 428 cases of rape and POCSO, a compensation of 5.42 crores was awarded to the victims by the authorities concerned.
