Hyderabad: With the Ramzan month round the corner and charity organizations distributing ration to the needy, cyber crooks have also got ready to con people on the pretext of providing groceries.

People have started receiving messages on their phones and social media platforms about a free ration distribution scheme. A message in circulation on WhatsApp and Facebook reads, ‘The Ramadan Relief Package 2026 Application Form is out.’

“The online registration exercise, which is the quickest way to apply, is now open for all Muslims in need. Each family will receive essential items such as flour, sugar, ghee, oil, pulses, gram flour, dates, rice and other items. Applications have begun and those who have applied have started getting their packages,” the ‘Ramzan Ration’ message states.

Cybercrime officials have advised citizens against falling prey to fraudsters who are attempting to trap them with ‘Ramzan Ration’ freebie messages. They said there is a general tendency among people to fall for freebies and click on the links they receive on their phones. “Cyber crooks are always waiting to strike during important religious festivals. They send a link with the sole aim of cheating people. If you click on the link, there is a risk that your phone security will get compromised. Under no circumstances should you click on the link. Immediately delete the message,” said a senior official of Telangana Cyber Security Bureau.

After gaining control of the gadget, the scammers withdraw money from bank accounts or steal personal data, including important documents and photos or videos of families. “At times, they might use the data stored in the phone to blackmail and extort money,” he added.

During the month of Ramzan, charity organizations distribute grocery kits among needy people so that the underprivileged have enough ration to cook for the sehri meal, the predawn meal.
