Telangana: Cybercrime rates go up in Karimnagar, Nirmal; decline in Ramagundam in 2024

Abnormal rise in cybercrime cases in Karimnagar
Karimnagar: There was a complete change in the type of crimes taking place in Karimnagar police commissionerate limits in 2024, with conventional crimes such as robberies, murders, chain snatchings, fatal accidents, rioting and others taking a backseat. Cybercrime cases registered an abnormal rise in overall crime rate this year, police said.
Cybercrime cases constituted almost half of the total crime rate, with 46 percent of cases being cybercrime cases, followed by land related offences at 15 percent, money related crimes at eight percent, and chit fund frauds at 7 percent. When compared to the previous year, there was a 37.96 percent spurt in cybercrime complaints received by the Commissionerate police. The number of cybercrime -related complaints went up to 2,282 (2024) from 1654 in 2023. While 258 cybercrime cases were registered in 2023, it went up to 270 in this year. Police managed to put Rs.9.87 crore on hold before fraudsters could transfer the cash from 233 cybercrime cases while Rs 1.74 crore were put on hold in 114 cases in 2023.
So far, cops got permission from the court to hand over Rs 2.57 crore to the victims. Last year, Rs 66 lakh was handed over to victims.
On the other hand, police achieved a major breakthrough in illegal land occupations. A total of 179 persons were arrested and produced in the court for creating fake land documents. Out of 113 land fraud cases, 60 cases were registered for creating fake boundaries. Surprisingly, there was a significant decline in other crimes. The highest of 44 percent reduction was recorded in rioting followed by robbery and dacoity by 38 percent, murders by 33 percent, chain snatching by 30 percent and road accidents by 9.36 percent.
Disclosing details of various crimes as part of the annual crime report here on Monday, Commissioner of Police Abhishek Mohanty informed that various crimes had declined due to various methods such as visible policing, enforcement of rules and others adopted by the commissionerae police.
Police personnel managed to reduce crime with just 40 percent of the required police force. The percentage has recently gone up to 70 percent of the required strength after the allocation of new personnel, he said.
Crime rate goes up in Nirmal in 2024
Nirmal: The district saw a rise in crimes in 2024 when compared to that of 2023.
Superintendent of Police Dr Janaki Sharmila, addressing media persons here on Monday, said the district registered a total of 3,521 offences as against 2,967 crimes occurred in 2023, reflecting an increase by 19 percent. She stated that it witnessed 15 murders, 24 house burglaries by day, 142 burglaries by night, 39 attempts to murder, 10 robberies, 39 rapes, 34 kidnaps in this year.
As per the SP, the district recorded a spurt in road accidents with 390 mishaps as against 212 in 2023, resulting in 133 deaths and injuries to 412 persons in 2024. Road safety committees were formed, while training was given to provide first aid treatment to victims of the mishaps. Sign boards, rumble strips and speed breakers were created to reduce road accidents.
Assets worth Rs 2.19 crore were stolen in the burglaries taken place in the district. Property valued Rs 63.70 lakh was recovered. The district saw 40 Prevention of SC, ST Atrocities Act cases and 3,606 drunk and drive cases. A total of 66 convictions were secured. Banned ganja weighing 24.8 kilograms and worth Rs 6.20 lakh was seized.

Ramagundam sees dip in cybercrime
Peddapalli: Though almost all districts in the State recorded rising numbers of cybercrime cases in 2024, there was a decline in such cases in the Ramagundam Commissionerate limits, comprising Peddapalli and Mancherial districts.
There was a difference of 56 cases between 2024 and 2023. While 337 cases with 145 in Peddapalli and 177 in Mancherial were recorded in 2023, it declined to 281 with 147 in Peddapalli and 134 in Mancherial this year.
Though the number of cases declined, the amount swindled by cyber fraudsters went up. While Rs 4.30 crore (Peddapalli-Rs 2.34 crore and Mancherial-Rs 1.96 crore) was fleeced from victims last year, it went up to Rs 5.02 crore (Peddapalli-Rs 2.30 crore and Mancherial-Rs 2.71 crore) this year, a jump of almost Rs 1.30 crore.
On the other hand, the overall crime rate in the commissionerate limits increased this year. A total of 20059 cases were reported. While 10173 cases were reported in Peddapalli, 10132 cases registered in Mancherial, an increase of 794 cases from the previous year’s 19,265 cases.
Commissioner of Police M Srinivas disclosed these details during a press conference at Godavarikhani on Monday.
