Telangana dental surgeons denied residency at sole government dental college

This year, the State Health Department for Government Dental College (GDC) deviated from its previous practice of selecting Senior Residents (SRs) for the one-year residency from eligible candidates across all Telangana districts, opting instead to choose dental surgeons exclusively from districts in multi-zone-II.

Hyderabad: Dental surgeons who have completed their Masters in Dental Surgery (MDS) from multiple districts in Telangana State were left high and dry this year, as they were looking forward to join as Senior Residents (SRs) at the only State-run Government Dental College, Afzalgunj.

Unlike its previous practice of selecting Senior Residents (SRs) for its one-year residentship from an eligible pool of candidates from all districts of Telangana State, this year, for Government Dental College (GDC), the State health department decided to select dental surgeons who were from districts from multi-zone-II.

As a result, dental surgeons who completed their BDS (Bachelor in Dental Surgery) and MDS (Masters in Dental Surgery) from districts under Multi zone-I, lost their eligibility to apply for the 50 much sought after Senior Residentships (SR) at the State-run Afzalgunj dental college.

“I did my BDS and MDS in Nizamabad. However, from this year, I am not eligible for Residentship at GDC because Nizamabad falls under Multi Zone I while GDC is considering dental students only from Multi Zone II,” a senior dental surgeon aspiring for Residentship said, on condition of anonymity.

The districts falling under Multi-Zone-I are KumaramBheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Peddpalli, Jayashankar-Bhupalapally, Adilabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Karimnagar, Sircilla, Medak, Kamareddy, Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal rural and Warangal urban districts.

All the remaining districts including Suryapet, Nalgonda, Bhongir-Yadadri, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Mahabubnagar, Jogulamba-Gadwal, Nagarkurnool and Wanaparthy districts are under Multi-Zone-II.

“We have also submitted memorandums to the State government through the Director of Medical Education (DME). This is a genuine problem for dental students who belong to Multi Zone-II districts. We urge the State government to be large hearted and oblige this year,” says president, All India Dental Students Association (AIDSA), Dr Md Manzur.
