Police present the couple before the media in Suryapet district on Monday
Suryapet: In a startling development, an aged couple were suspected to have been starved to death after they were forced to live in a makeshift tarpauline tent erected on the premises of their house, by their own son and daughter-in-law, police said.
The son Nallu Nageshwar Reddy and his wife Lakshmi have since been taken into custody. Police have also exhumed the bodies of the old couple – Nallu Ramachandra Reddy (90) and his wife Anasuyamma (80) – and sent for autopsy. Incidentally, both Ramachandra Reddy and Anasuyamma died on the same day – May 27, and their final rites performed by their son Nageshwar Reddy.
Police entered the scene after villagers of Thummagudem of Mothe mandal suspected a foul play in the death of the aged couple on the same day. There were rumours that Nageshwar Reddy was not taking care of his parents in old age and that they were not given food at all. As the information reached the police, Mothe Sub-Inspector Praveen began investigations and found that the old couple was forced to live under a tarpauline tent on the house premises. Police also learnt that the old couple was denied of food and even drinking water.
A case under section 304 -II of the IPC was registrered and arrests made. The Munagala Circle Inspector Anjaneyulu who was supervising the probe warned of stringent action against those neglecting their parents.
