Hyderabad: Telangana government continued to make major strides in ensuring quality healthcare services were available for the poor in government hospitals in 2021. The Telangana State Statistical Abstract-2021, released by Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) here on Wednesday, indicated that the State made significant improvement in vital health care indices, which usually were employed to measure the success of health care services in government hospitals.
In fact, in 2021, the quality of health care services in Telangana, especially in Mother and Children Health (MCH) services were recognised by NITI Aayog. In the Health Index rankings released by NITI Aayog, Telangana emerged among the top three Indian States to have the best quality health care facilities in the country. When compared to national averages, Telangana consistently registered drop in vital health care indices including Total Fertility Rate (TFR), which is the number of children per women in child bearing age group of 15 years, and 49 years, Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR).
Telangana also emerged as the only Indian State (among 19 other larger Indian States) to have registered strong overall performance and also showed incremental performance between 2018-19 and 2019-20. Telangana was the only State to have displayed strong overall performance and also registered improvements in the health care sector. “The Government of Telangana considers health as a priority sector. Its focus has been on the multidimensional enhancement of the healthcare system in the State, especially the health infrastructure, the nutrition status of women and children, and health financing, among others,” the TS Statistical Abstract said. The State government also continued to cover a large number of individuals below poverty line by providing them quality health care facilities in private hospitals through Arogyasri scheme. The scheme, which covered a total of 1,07,527 beneficiaries in 2021, provides financial protection to families living below poverty line of up to Rs 2 lakh in a year for treating ailments that require hospitalization and surgery.
