Hyderabad: With nearly a week left for students to return to classrooms and hostels on June 12, the Telangana Food Commission has directed schools to check the condition of previously stored cooking supplies, including rice, lentils, salt and chilli powder, and use fresh supplies instead of spoiled ones.
This direction comes after several students fell ill following the consumption of food in schools and hostels during the academic year 2025-26.
In a letter to district collectors, DGROs, DEOs and Welfare departments, the Commission, citing unfortunate incidents in the past that resulted in food poisoning, directed that kitchens be thoroughly cleaned and whitewashed.
Water tanks and water fountains provided for children should be emptied and cleaned using bleaching powder before use, it said, adding that kitchens, dining halls, toilets and surrounding areas should also be cleaned.
The Commission directed officials and schools to take precautionary measures for the successful implementation of the National Food Security Act, 2013, and PM Poshan (midday meals).
