Peddapalli: Panic gripped residents of Veerlapalli, Laxmipuram, Elkalapalli Gate, Vittal Nagar, Thilak Nagar, Shanthi Nagar, Goutham Nagar, Chaitanyapuri colony, Sanjay Gandhi Nagar and other areas following leakage of ammonia gas from a plant under construction at Ramagundam Fertiliser and Chemical Limited on Tuesday night.
People complained of breathing problem and said this was happening frequently of late. The same problem was faced on Sunday night too. The residents came on to the roads unable to bear the smell in their houses.
RFCL authorities, who had shut down the Ammonia unit in March, started the plant after 45 days and were conducting trial runs in the nights. There was apparently a leak in the pipeline causing the problem.
The residents urged the government to take steps to prevent leakage of gas from RFCL.
Reacting to the gas leak, Executive Engineer, Regional Pollution Control Board, Ravidas said they have issued notices to RFCL authorities over leakage of Ammonia gas. They, along with police officials, discussed the problem with the management. They instructed the management to start production only after completion of the plant, he said.

Peddapalli: Ramagundam MLA Korukanti Chander urged Ramagundam Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited officials to take steps to check the leakage of gas from RFCL.
In the wake of local residents’ panicking over leakage of gas from the plant, the MLA conducted a review meeting with the officials in Ramagundam Police Commissioner V Satyanaryana’s chamber on Wednesday evening.
Officials from RFCL and Pollution Control Board participated in the review. The MLA enquired about the reasons for leakage of gas from the plant and steps taken to address the problem. Chander instructed the RFCL officials to take adequate steps to control the leakage of gas since people residing in the surrounding areas were in a panic mode. He said he will visit the plant on Thursday.
Ramagundam Municipal Corporation Mayor Bangi Anil Kumar also participated in the review meeting.
