Telangana: Heavy rains devastate crops in Nizamabad, Balkonda worst hit
Heavy rains over three days in Nizamabad, particularly in Balkonda constituency, have damaged thousands of acres of paddy, maize, and soya crops. Overflowing rivers and breached tanks worsened flooding, prompting local MLA Vemula Prashanth Reddy to demand Rs 25,000 per acre compensation
Nizamabad: Heavy rains that have lashed the district over the past three days have caused severe losses for farmers, with the Balkonda constituency bearing the brunt of the damage.
Local MLA and former Minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy, along with officials, inspected the damaged crops. According to preliminary estimates from the Agriculture Department, 1,162 acres of paddy, 95 acres of maize, 35 acres of soya, and other crops were affected due to rains and flooding.
Apart from heavy rainfall, some tanks in upstream areas of Nizamabad Rural constituency breached, submerging several fields in Balkonda, farmers said. The Kappalavagu and Peddavagu rivers have been overflowing for several days.
Many roads and culverts in areas such as Mothe, Bheemgal, and Bada Bheemgal suffered extensive damage, disrupting traffic movement in the region.
“Considering the losses, the government should provide compensation of Rs 25,000 per acre to the farmers,” demanded Prashanth Reddy.
