Hyderabad: Justice K Lakshman of the Telangana High Court on Tuesday quashed three criminal cases registered against BRS working president and Sircilla MLA KT Rama Rao, holding that multiple FIRs for the same offence cannot be sustained in law. The three FIRs – Nos. 85, 86, and 87 of 2025, were registered at Nakrekal Police Station, Nalgonda district, alleging that Rama Rao circulated on his social media handle (Twitter/X) a news item regarding the alleged SSC Telugu Board exam question paper leak. The purported leak was said to have occurred at TSWRS Gurukul School, Nakrekal, and the news was telecast on two platforms – Scribe YouTube channel (Web) and T-News channel.

During the hearing of the three criminal petitions (CRLP Nos. 8965, 8989 & 8966 of 2025) filed by KTR, Justice Lakshman observed that the police could not register multiple FIRs for the same set of allegations.

“The allegation made against the petitioner in the three complaints is one and the same,” the court noted while quashing all three FIRs.

Rama Rao’s counsel argued that the said news telecast by the two channels was fake and that the BRS MLA, without independently verifying it, had merely reposted it on his social media handle. He contended that such an act does not constitute any criminal offence, and therefore the continuation of proceedings was unsustainable.

Accepting the submissions, the High Court quashed the FIRs and disposed of the petitions in Rama Rao’s favour, bringing relief to the BRS leader.
