Dubai: It is a daunting task for NRIs to take care and support for their families consisting of minor children and women back home in India from far away.
The turmoil in the family of Saudi Arabian NRI Gaddam Srinivas, whose minor son and wife were arrested in connection with a road mishap that caused the death of a person, exemplifies the trauma many expatriate families are undergoing.
The police action in the case has not only sent a stringent warning to NRI parents, but has also elicited a positive response as many NRIs hailed it and termed it a wake-up call.
A native of Rudrangi in Rajanna Sircilla district, Srinivas is the sole breadwinner of the family and works in Saudi Arabia while his wife Srilakshmi looks after the family back home. The couple’s son Sanjay is a minor. However, he rides a bike, which was purchased by Srilakshmi on her name. Recently, Sanjay was involved in an accident with his bike hitting another bike, resulting in the death of an elderly man, Kante Ramulu.
The police arrested Srilakshmi, the owner of the vehicle on charges of allowing her minor son drive it without a license. She was later released on bail while Sanjay was sent to juvenile custody.
The Chandurthi area, which has several Gulf migrants, has many fathers in the Middle East with their absence leading to many minors driving, Venkateshwarlu, CI of Police told ‘Telangana Today’ over the phone.
