Hyderabad: Yet another initiative that was taken up by the previous BRS government is going to be launched in a few days. The Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) at Sanathnagar is likely to be inaugurated on June 2.

The construction of TIMS Sanathnagar got delayed though it should have been inaugurated last year. The Roads and Building Department is now racing against time to complete the remaining works and make the Institute ready for inauguration.

“Save for a few works, the majority of the works from our end have been completed. The medical department has to commence installation of equipment, furniture and beds. The idea is to complete all the works by the end of May and get the hospital inaugurated on June 2,” a senior R&B official said.

The BRS government had commenced the construction of TIMS Hospitals at Warangal, Alwal, LB Nagar and Sanathnagar apart from launching expansion works at NIMS. The objective was to decentralise government hospital services in Greater Hyderabad and reduce the burden on NIMS and the Osmania, Gandhi hospitals.

The Sanathnagar hospital is coming up in an area over 53 acres and the project is being taken up at a cost of Rs 882 crore. Though the construction of TIMS hospitals at LB Nagar, Sanathnagar and Alwal was to be completed a year ago, things got delayed for different reasons, including a fund crunch.

Roads and Building Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy had assured that the TIMS hospital at LB Nagar and Alwal would be ready by December 2025. However, considering the pace at which the works are being taken up, meeting the deadline appears to be quite a task. The NIMS expansion project will be completed next year, officials said.

A political row had erupted after the Roads and Buildings Minister last year had announced that the number of floors at LB Nagar hospital would be cut down from 27 to 12. He had even argued that it was not operationally viable to have a hospital with 27 floors.

Countering his claims, former Health Minister T Harish Rao had clarified that the LB Nagar hospital was planned as a G+14 structure. He had also pointed out the Congress government was constructing a 24-floor hospital in Jaipur and sought to know as to why the Minister ignored similar high-rise hospitals.
