Telangana: Jurala gates closed as flood inflows decline

Jurala project officials closed the gates after flood inflows declined following reduced rainfall in Maharashtra and Karnataka. With inflows at 80,000 cusecs, 39,608 cusecs are being released downstream. Officials ruled out irrigation releases, citing concerns over next season’s drinking water supply

Jogulamba Gadwal: Officials of the Jurala project on Sunday closed the project gates following a decline in flood inflows after releasing substantial quantities of water downstream over the past few days.

Officials said the inflows declined from the Almatti and Narayanpur dams following a reduction in rainfall in Maharashtra and Karnataka.

The inflows into Jurala currently stand at 80,000 cusecs, while 39,608 cusecs of water is being released downstream. Power generation continues through all six units through the water released downstream.

The project officials have declared that water will not be released to farming community following the decline in inflows. The project provides to nearly 1.03 lakh acres through its left and right canals.

Officials also maintained that if water was released for agriculture activities, it would impact drinking water supply in the next season. The full reservoir level of the project is 318.51 metres, against the current level of 317.51 metres. The project has a full storage capacity of 9.65 TMC and currently holds 7.66 TMC.

With the floodwaters receding, officials closed the gates, while power generation continues. The reduction in releases from Jurala is also expected to lead to a decline in inflows into the Srisailam project.
