Telangana leaders’ conflicting claims on Krishna water allocations—from 500 TMC to 904 TMC—have drawn sharp criticism from experts, opposition, and even ruling party circles. Experts warn such flip-flops may weaken the State’s case at the tribunal
Telangana Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has announced the state’s firm opposition to Karnataka’s proposal to raise the height of the Almatti Dam, citing ongoing proceedings in the Supreme Court. During his inspection of the Jawahar Jan Pahad Lift Irrigation Scheme, Reddy reaffirmed Telangana’s commitment to completing the Pranahita Chevella project.
The Nagarjuna Sagar Dam has reached 98% of its full capacity, prompting water release through 15 gates to manage heavy upstream inflows. The reservoir supports irrigation in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and is currently generating 815.6 MW of hydroelectric power.
Almatti Dam is nearing its full capacity due to heavy inflows. The present storage crossed the 100 TMC mark against its gross storage capacity of 129 TMC on Tuesday.
The Almatti dam started receiving inflows that are in the range of about 1,00,000 cusecs on Tuesday. The catchment of the upper Krishna irrigation projects in Karnataka have been receiving heavy rains for the last four days.
