Telangana likely to receive above-normal rainfall in August: IMD

Hyderabad: As large parts of the country prepare for a relatively dry second half of the southwest monsoon under the shadow of a strengthening El Nino, Telangana is well positioned to defy the trend of a national rainfall deficit in August.

According to the latest extended-range forecast and monthly outlook from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Telangana and other southern States are set to receive normal to above-normal rainfall during the first half of August 2026, driven by a series of low-pressure systems and regional weather dynamics.

Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh lie directly in the path of Bay of Bengal low-pressure systems. As a result, these two regions are expected to witness strong and active spells of rain compared to other regions, the IMD, New Delhi, assessment indicated.

The recent heavy rainfall in the districts and light to moderate rain in Hyderabad during the second half of July and early August was due to a deep depression that moved across neighbouring Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh, bringing intense rainfall over Telangana.

Barring sporadic spells of light rain, the next few days, at least till August 5, are expected to remain relatively dry across Hyderabad and the districts, the IMD, New Delhi, indicated. Daytime temperatures are expected to remain within comfortable, near-normal ranges, hovering up to 1.5 degrees Celsius above or below the average.

The break from rain, however, will be short-lived, as weather models from the IMD have indicated a fresh monsoon revival over Telangana during the second week of August, from August 6 to 12.

A new low-pressure area is expected to form over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal during the middle of the week. This system is expected to trigger another round of scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over Telangana, bringing steady rainfall to most districts in the State.

According to the long-term forecast from the IMD, New Delhi, El Nino conditions will continue to strengthen. While national forecasts project rainfall across the country as a whole to fall below 94 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA) in August, Telangana, along with parts of eastern Peninsular India, including coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, is expected to remain an exception.

The IMD, New Delhi, has placed northern, eastern and central districts of Telangana in the favourable zone for normal to above-normal rainfall in August. However, western and southern pockets may receive normal or slightly below-normal rainfall.
