Telangana: Near-zero dropouts in primary schools

Hyderabad: The State has achieved a near-zero overall dropout rate in primary schools in 2019-20, while the dropout rate in upper primary schools was negligible, at 0.06 per cent as of 2019-20.

These statistics were revealed in the Telangana State Statistical Abstract 2021 released by the Telangana State Development Planning Society, Planning department on Wednesday. On the other hand, the dropout rate in high schools as of 2019-20 was 12.29 per cent.


As many as 40,898 schools under different managements were functioning in 2019-20 in the State. Of these, 20,752 were primary, 7,471 upper primary, 11,921 high, and 754 higher secondary schools. With 2,902 schools, Hyderabad has the highest number of schools, while Jayashankar district, with 537 schools, has the lowest.

A total of 60,06,344 students including 9,93,174 in primary, 8,14,542 in upper primary, 37,91,840 in high schools and 4,06,788 in higher secondary schools were enrolled in 2019-20.

The Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in the State for primary (I-V), upper primary (VI-VIII) and secondary (IX-X) levels stood at 111.96 per cent, 97.46 per cent, and 88.0 per cent respectively. Among districts, Ranga Reddy has the highest GER at all three levels – primary, upper primary and secondary – at 176.11 per cent, 151.29 per cent and 125.35 per cent respectively.

As per the report, the State has a total teacher-student ratio of 23 combining all levels of school education. The teacher-student ratio in the State at the primary level is 20, which is remarkably better than the Right to Education-mandated norm of 40, implying that at the primary level, each student gets more personalised education in Telangana, it said.

Similarly, the total teacher-student ratio in upper primary schools is at 18, which is better than the Right to Education mandated norm for teacher-student ratio – 35, it added.
