Telangana Nurses Association seeks tighter security for nurses after Tukkuguda murder

The Telangana Nurses Association has demanded tighter security, safe accommodation and stronger workplace safeguards for nurses following the murder of 21-year-old nurse V.K. Sirisha in Tukkuguda. The association also sought DME-level monitoring and accountability mechanisms across teaching hospitals.

Hyderabad: The Telangana Nurses Association (TNA) on Monday said that healthcare workers, especially nurses who are the first line of defense in hospitals, remain highly exposed without proper residential safety, institutional lodging safeguards, and protection from private and government teaching hospitals.

Condemning the tragic murder of 21-year-old nurse V.K. Sirisha in Tukkuguda, which falls under the Pahadeshareef police station limits, the members of the nursing association also participated in protests at Osmania General Hospital (OGH) campus, over the horrific attack.

The nursing association has demanded that the health authorities must provide tight security to nurses, adequate resting facilities, proper changing rooms, individual lockers, and well-lit, secure night accommodations, which are fundamental prerequisites rather than mere luxury provisions.

The TNA in a memorandum submitted to senior health officials highlighted that nursing personnel, who continuously handle high-risk clinical areas like emergency wards and ICUs, are left entirely vulnerable when basic occupational safety standards are overlooked by the managements of private and State-run medical colleges.

The TNA is also demanding a strict, DME-level monitoring and compliance mechanism where institutional heads must submit periodic reports covering critical safety parameters, including night security protocols, immediate grievance redressal systems, and active protection against workplace violence. TNA leaders stressed that enforcing these accountability measures and ensuring professional dignity is critical to safeguarding nursing professionals so they can work free from the threat of violence.
