Hyderabad: Teachers MLC Pingili Sripal Reddy, along with Pensioners’ Association president Peri Venkata Reddy, on Thursday flagged a medicines shortage in wellness centres and urged the Health Department to ensure adequate supplies.

Sripal Reddy and Venkata Reddy, who met Health Department Secretary Christiana Chongthu, pointed out that there was a medicines shortage in 12 wellness centres, which are meant to ensure the health of employees, teachers and pensioners in the State. They highlighted that pensioners were facing issues as there was a shortage of medicines for BP and diabetes.

In response, Chongthu assured them that necessary steps would be initiated immediately to address the issue and said all the existing wellness centres have now been linked with teaching hospitals attached to medical colleges. For the past two months, professors and doctors have been available to provide treatment for all kinds of illnesses.

The government has proposals to establish wellness centres in 22 more districts, she said, adding that once budget allocations are made, wellness centres would be set up in all districts within a month.
