Hyderabad: Making it clear that any attempt to create strife in Hyderabad would be dealt with strictly, Director-General of Police M Mahendar Reddy on Thursday said legal action would be initiated against those making provocative speeches during the GHMC poll campaign.
Reddy was interacting with the media here after reviewing the security arrangements being made for the elections.
On the controversial ‘surgical strike’ statement by BJP State president Bandi Sanjay, the DGP said all speeches, including that of MIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi, were under legal examination. Stating that the police had information on some elements attempting to create unrest, he said individuals with criminal background were trying to take advantage of the situation and trigger communal hatred.
“We are alert,” he said, adding that social media posts too were being monitored. As for poll arrangements, 51,500 police personnel were being deployed.
The entire effort was to ensure that the election passes off peacefully with people being allowed to vote in a free and fair manner. The police had also bound over around 3,500 rowdy sheeters and would ensure that no person disturbed the peaceful atmosphere in the city.
Earlier, the DGP said 62 cases were booked against Rohingyas for fraudulently procuring Indian identity cards including Aadhaar cards, voter IDs and passports.
