Hyderabad: Starting this academic year, students of government schools will learn the basics of coding, artificial intelligence and design thinking.
In a move to prepare students for the future, the School Education department has integrated coding, data science, artificial intelligence, physical computing, design thinking and digital citizenship into the State curriculum for Classes VI to IX.
As part of the initiative, a book titled Digital Learning has been introduced as a separate module for students of all government schools, local body schools, Model Schools, KGBVs and TREIS.
Separate learning material has been developed for each theme, aiming to provide foundational knowledge and practical skills in emerging technologies.
The module is designed to be contextual, activity-based and linked to real-life applications, employing strategies for active learning and blending theory with practice.
While coding and data science will be taught by mathematics teachers, AI, physical computing, design thinking and digital citizenship will be handled by Physical Science, English and Social Studies teachers respectively.
Prior to the rollout, a two-day capacity building programme for district digital resource persons was organised, during which eight teachers from each district — two each from mathematics, physical science, English and Social Studies — were trained last month.
Further, mathematics and physical science teachers were trained to improve their skills in coding, data science and AI.
Teachers have been asked to use digital concepts and tools as supplementary resources during regular subject teaching for better clarity. Before commencing classwork, schools have been instructed to distribute the Digital Learning book to all students of Classes VI to IX.
Students completing projects under this module will be eligible for appreciation certificates. District administrations have been asked to maintain a district-wise digital repository of student projects using shared drive links.
