Hyderabad: The State government on Monday urged the Centre to increase funding to Telangana State under the Central Sector Schemes or Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) by at least 10-folds from this financial year. Agriculture Minister S Niranjan Reddy submitted a representation to Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shobha Karandlaje in this regard.

He said the total Central allocation to the State under all the CSS by the Union Ministry of Agriculture was just Rs 800 crore per annum. “It is pertinent to submit that this level of support is insufficient for a State like Telangana, which has a share of 3.41 per cent in the national geographical area, but contributes over 4.65 per cent of the national cropped area and 9.9 per cent of the national cereal production,” he said.

Niranjan Reddy explained that the Telangana government was striving to restore pride in agriculture through its efforts to increase profitability for farmers, retain rural youth in agriculture, crop diversification, farm mechanisation, and increased emphasis on horticulture.

He said the government was spending about Rs 50,000-60,000 crore of the State Budget on the agriculture sector by providing uninterrupted quality power free of cost, as well as implementing Rythu Bandhu and Rythu Bima schemes.

“We have established over 3,000 procurement centres managed by Self Help Group women to ensure that farmers get remunerative prices for their crops. The effort of the State government has been to provide end-to-end support to the farmers so that there is a positive incremental income and satisfaction within the farmer’s families,” he said, emphasising the need for the Centre’s support to the State government’s initiatives.
