Hyderabad: Telangana is planning to set up about 600 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to add to the existing 138. The effort is to reduce range anxiety among the current EV users and also encourage new users into the fold, said Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy.
Speaking at the inauguration of the ‘EV Trade Expo’ organised by the Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO) at Hitex, he said the use of electric vehicles was an effective option in dealing with environmental pollution. In view of the advantages the EVs have, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and IT Minister KT Rama Rao had been promoting their use in the State.
The government is offering incentives for players opting to manufacture the EVs in the State. This apart, the State has brought out an Energy Storage Solutions policy to support the manufacturing of the batteries and storage solutions required by the EV industry by offering further incentives, the minister said. The use of EV vehicles is on the rise but many have doubts about the availability of having adequate charging infrastructure. To allay this fear, the State is planning to add about 600 EV charging stations shortly, he said.
Telangana has successfully dealt with the power crisis that was present in the State a few years ago and now is offering power 24/7 to domestic, industry, and farm segments. Cities like Delhi in the country and Beijing in China are already grappling with smog and emissions due to environmental pollution. Using electric vehicles will reduce the emissions and will also lower the oil imports bill by Rs 250 crore when their use hits the threshold number of 10,000 vehicles, he said.
Energy Special Chief Secretary Sunil Sharma and TSREDCO Vice Chairman and Managing Director N Janaiah were present.
