Hyderabad: The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has issued a public advisory cautioning citizens against fake “Happy New Year” greetings, gifts, and offer links circulating on WhatsApp and other messaging platforms during the New Year season.
Shikha Goel, Director TGCSB, said that cybercriminals are using festive themes to deceive users by sending links disguised as SBI credit card year-end offers, New Year gifts, travel discounts, event tickets, and other festive deals. These messages often prompt recipients to click a link to view a greeting, claim an offer, or receive a gift.
“Clicking on such links may result in the silent installation of a malicious APK file on the victim’s mobile phone. Once installed, the malware can gain unauthorised access to OTPs, banking details, contacts, photos, and WhatsApp accounts, enabling fraudsters to impersonate victims and carry out further financial and social engineering frauds,” said Shikha Goel.
The TGCSB further noted that these malicious links are frequently forwarded through trusted contacts and family groups, making them appear genuine and increasing the likelihood of victimisation.
The TGCSB advises citizens to avoid clicking on greetings, gifts, or offer links received via WhatsApp or SMS, and never install applications or updates sent through messaging platforms. and not share OTPs, PINs, CVV numbers, or verification codes with anyone.
“Citizens who may have clicked on such links are advised to immediately disconnect internet access, uninstall suspicious applications, secure their accounts, inform their banks if necessary, and report the incident without delay,” said the official.
